- Considering the four sites where Chicken Express is installed, is there a common theme you are trying to solve?
Yes we are, that’s why I’ve engaged Chicken Express in the stores and that is to offer a take home meal solution to my consumers. So there are a number of things the stores are doing to try and give the consumer that option and I thought Chicken Express would fit into that area quite well… so that was my thought process to put into stores.
- What is it about Chicken Express that stands out from other options?
I haven’t been involved in other options. I’m not talking about other chicken offers, I’m simply talking about what we would normally do in the supermarket trade is a little bit hit-and-miss and doesn’t really come with any type of training so each individual store is trying to make their own way and trying to make their own decisions about what they are offering for lunch and what they are offering for dinner… so the box of chicken offer is very good in the fact that it is a trained process that is reasonably simple, that staff can follow and deliver.
- How would you rate the training provided by Chicken Express?
Very good. Jarrod is very good!
- How would you rate the Chicken Express Team?
Very professional. Almost annoying!! (Peter laughs)
- In what areas of your sites has Chicken Express better utilised staff?
We’ve been able to cook and display a product in conjunction with our deli offer so in that respect it hasn’t had a high impact on staff wages. It’s been a bolt-on to the deli staff, so that’s been quite efficient in that manner.
- What has Chicken Express added to your stores in turnover? Is there a common thread?
It varies between stores and we are looking at it as a percentage of the total business. It varies between 2.8% to 4.5%. We are very happy with what it has added to our stores, and that depends on the location of the store etc.
- Do you have any suggestions or comments?
I spoke to Jarrod about it yesterday. It’s an interesting field because predominantly I would imagine that Chicken Express, or that type of offer, traditionally is targeted to takeaway food stores, general stores, service stations probably… so the supermarket game is a little bit different. I know in Dungog we do a number of chicken products that people come in and consume for lunch, so I’m interested to see if whether or not there is an option to expand the range a little without overcomplicating it, that would cater for the business.
